Fruit bat migration matches green wave in seasonal landscapes

چکیده
Migrating grazers and carnivores respond to seasonal changes in the environment often match peaks resource abundance. However, it is unclear whether how frugivorous animals use phenological events time migration, especially tropics. The straw-coloured fruit bat Eidolon helvum, Africa's most gregarious bat, forms large colonies throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. We hypothesized that aggregations E. helvum timing their migration with phenologies plant growth or precipitation. Using monthly colony counts from across species' range, we matched peak size landscape explored variation among matching overall closest event. Peak was instantaneous rate green-up, sites closer temporal were associated higher maximum greenness, short growing season larger size. seem migrations move into highly landscapes exploit short-lived explosions food may benefit collective sensing migrations. link between rapid also imply potential environment. Overall decreasing numbers along various threats might cause this property be lost. Remote data, although, indirectly linked fruiting events, can potentially used globally describe predict species a changing world. Read free Plain Language Summary for article on Journal blog.

Rayleigh matches and unique green
There are recurrent reports that Rayleigh matches are bimodally distributed in the colour-normal male population. Similar claims have been made for the distribution of the spectral locus of unique green. Moreover, a positive correlation has sometimes been reported between Rayleigh matches and unique green. Using a computer-controlled Maxwellian colorimeter and bias-free psychophysical methods, ...

متن کاملDeforestation Impacts on Bat Functional Diversity in Tropical Landscapes
Functional diversity is the variability in the functional roles carried out by species within ecosystems. Changes in the environment can affect this component of biodiversity and can, in turn, affect different processes, including some ecosystem services. This study aimed to determine the effect of forest loss on species richness, abundance and functional diversity of Neotropical bats. To this ...
متن کاملUncovering the fruit bat bushmeat commodity chain and the true extent of fruit bat hunting in Ghana, West Africa
Harvesting, consumption and trade of bushmeat are important causes of both biodiversity loss and potential zoonotic disease emergence. In order to identify possible ways to mitigate these threats, it is essential to improve our understanding of the mechanisms by which bushmeat gets from the site of capture to the consumer's table. In this paper we highlight the previously unrecognized scale of ...
